Here's the challenge:
In 12 weeks I will lose a certain percentage of body fat and be able to fit comfortably into those pair of shorts you saw however w/o flab hanging over :)

(I'm looking for 12 YouTubers to help keep me motivated and on track. You need to be able to give me your phone number so I can call you at the end of the week or at the beginning. I will video tape our discussion and post it up on my channel. For example:
John will be motivator for week one. Sam will be week two...etc. If interested please send me a message or post a comment saying you're interested. I'll let you know in a few days who the 12 will be.)

If I fail I will donate $1,000 to a non-profit organization.

I will only shave all my facial hair off, including eyebrows, if YOU all manage to raise $1,000. The money raised will go towards a non-profit organization of my chosing if and only if I WIN. Basal Metabolic Rate and How It Affects Weight Loss

Basal Metabolic Rate is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when you think about weight loss. We usually think about dieting and exercise programs. But, BMR is a large factor in how our bodies gain or lose weight.

Counting the calories consumed in foods or used in exercise needs to have some base line to measure against. Part of this measurement is based on the basal metabolic rate or BMR. The BMR is the base rate for the body's calorie consumption for the basic functions of the body like pumping blood, maintaining body temperature and repairing blood cells.

The food calories consumed and the exercise calories expended are both important to success in weight loss. The number of calories taken in less the number of calories used equals the calories that are left to be stored as fat in adipose tissues. That amount is approximately 70 calories per hour; a little more when we are awake and a little less when we are sleeping. Everyone has a slightly different BMR depending partially on their genetics and partially on their body types.

Other factors that affect the basal metabolic rate are your body temperature (for instance, if you have a fever) and some medications (such as antidepressants). A fever can cause weight loss and antidepressants can cause weight gain. Talk to your health care professional about how the medications you take can affect your body and whether you would need to take additional steps to prevent excessive weight gain.

Your body must have some fat in order to function. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are used for electrical functions by the heart, brain and muscles. They are also used by the body for regulating hormones.

BMR can also be changed when you are injured. This is a temporary change while your body is using essential fatty acids and proteins to rebuild damaged tissues. Some weight can be lost when recovering from an injury, depending on its severity. Of course, you wouldn't want to go out and break a leg just to lose a few pounds :)

Foods that are high in fat and refined sugars can reduce the basal metabolic rate because they are low in fiber and bulk. This slows down the activity in the intestines and causes the body to absorb more calories from them. Proper nutrition and getting enough vitamins and minerals can help regulate the BMR.

BMR is generally determined by family genetics. To prevent the poor BMR levels that are handed down from the generations before you, it is important to eat a proper diet and exercise according to your age and body's fitness level.

Taking the basal metabolic rate into account when you are planning to lose weight will help you on the road to success.

Diets DO Work for Weight Loss

Its so easy to screw up your weight loss plan with a bad diet.

I know, there are too many diets, but I believe some of them work. Why can't the experts agree on just one nutrition program?"

Well, first, let me say that I believe diets DO work, and that there are so many of them because we all have such different personalities and likes and dislikes for foods, that it really shouldn't come as a huge surprise that a bunch of different diets can work.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of extreme diets. I don't think you have to restrict yourself of carbohydrates. After all, that's never going to work if you've been raised to eat an apple and a banana everyday.

You can eat apples and bananas and oranges and still lose weight. Almost all foods can be incorporated into a healthy fat loss plan.

So I'm about to give you my preferred nutrition plan. It's not extreme. It's not crazy. It's not about denying you any healthy foods. You can eat meat, carbohydrates, and healthy fats on this program.

It's really all about eating whole, natural foods. In fact, I sometimes joke that my plan should be called the "dental floss diet", because almost every food in the plan requires you to floss after eating it (apples, nuts, meat, oranges, broccoli, etc., etc.).

So live a healthy lifestyle, eat whole, natural foods, and avoid fast food. Its that easy.

After all, there's a saying in the fitness industry, "you can't out-train a bad diet", and that hold's true almost 100% of the time (and especially as you get older).

Fortunately, I also believe that good nutrition for fat loss is very simple. And here are my 5 steps to building a fast fat burning diet.

1) Find out how much you are eating now. Use fitday.com.

2) If you are not losing weight, eat less.

3) Eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, and good protein sources. No more processed foods.

4) Give yourself one treat meal per week to look forward to - not a treat day, just a treat meal.

5) Plan ahead. On Saturday or Sunday, go to the store, buy all your food, and then cook it and freeze it for the week. You will avoid bad habits this way. Identify obstacles and come up with solutions to avoid them.

That is it.

Very simple. Most people do pretty well on 1-3 and even 5, but mess up on number 4. People cheat a lot more than they admit to me. You have to be honest with what you are eating. Track it for a few days. It could be shocking.

The little things can add up to big time problems. Record your diet.

And all of this can be avoided if you follow rule #5.

Originally started just to be a forum for weight loss information, they have become haven for fast weight loss. Many people say that their diet works. It is simply a program that uses several "tricks" to help you loose pounds. Their boast is that you will loose 9 pounds every 11 days.

Calorie Shifting

The system they use is called "calorie shifting." The way it works is to trick your metabolism by eating in a way that it doesn't expect. For instance, they say that your metabolism works on the way you've eaten over the last few days. To fool it, you will shift the types of calories you eat every few days. They have a plan to help you figure this out. To get the basic package that includes the Diet Generator and the Diet Handbook it will cost you $39. This is cheaper than most weight loss programs.

Does it work?

What this basically amounts to is a low carb diet. The principle works of course and has been proven by many other low carb programs. Whether it is realistic to expect that you would lose 9 pounds every 11 days may not be realistic.

It's a program that doesn't seem to require any exercise and you can get started right away - all you have to do is follow the menus.
