Are Your Loved Ones Hindering Your Weight Loss Efforts?

Sometimes our loved ones can hinder our weight loss goals. Often times their intention is not to hinder us.

For example, I love donuts. There was a time in my life when I simply could not say "no" to them. I would wind up binging on them - I could eat 4 to 6 donuts with no problem at all.

I began a weight loss program. I was following my plan to the tee. Then on Saturday morning, my husband brought home some donuts. "Here honey, I thought you'd enjoy these." I devoured every last crumb.

My husbands intention was not to make me go off plan. He wasn't even thinking that I was trying to lose weight. He simply wanted to do something nice for me.

Your loved ones could be hindering you by tempting you with seconds, cooking your favorite foods, or buying your favorite ice cream.

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Identify your loved ones behavior that is sabotaging your weight loss efforts.
  2. Identify your loved ones reasons for that behavior.
    • Are they trying to do something nice for you?
    • Do they feel appreciated when you eat their cooking?
    • Are they bringing in the ice cream for themselves, not realizing that is making you lose track of your goals?
  3. Tell your loved one what you need from him/her.

You need to be assertive. Tell them exactly what you need from him/her and why. I told my husband ...

"I really appreciate the fact that you love me so much, that you brought donuts home. However as I can't seem to say "no" to them, I would appreciate it even more if you could restrain from bringing them home. A hug from you lets me know how much you care and appreciate me."

I told him in exactly what I needed and why. I showed him I appreciated his gesture, and gave him an alternative action so that his needs would be met as well.

If you are a little apprehensive about approaching your loved one, ask yourself why. It's probably one of two reasons:

  1. You like having someone to blame for your failures. It's easy to say, "I keep blowing it because my wife is such a good cook and demands I eat seconds." Or "My husband is so nice to me he keeps buying me donuts, if I tell him to stop, he may never buy me anything again." If this is you, you need to decide how important reaching your goal really is. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming others.

  2. You don't know how to approach them or you don't want to hurt their feelings. If this is the case then you need to practice ... in front of the mirror, to a friend, or even to the dog. Picture yourself telling your loved one exactly what you need from him/her to help you achieve your goals.

Remember, more than anything else, your loved ones want YOU to be HAPPY and HEALTHY, and will do anything in their power to help you achieve your goals.

H20 - What's Water Good For Anyway?

Right from the top, juice, soda, alcohol and coffee/tea do not count as water! I see a lot of people counting those drinks as part of their daily intake of water, but what they really do is increase your sugar (and calorie) consumption and DEHYDRATE you even more than you already are. And to be clear, dehydration does the opposite of what water does, which is hydrate your body. Keep in mind that your body is made up of 80% water and most of the population is severely dehydrating themselves due to their westernized way of living. 2. Water is the substance of life. Life can not exist without water. We must constantly be adding fresh water to our body in order to keep it properly hydrated. 3. Water is essential for proper circulation in the body. The levels of oxygen in the bloodstream are greater when the body is well-hydrated. Not only will the body burn more fat when it's well-hydrated it also increases oxygen levels; which means you will also have more energy.

Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits.

5. Dehydration can occur at any time of the year, not only during the summer months when it is hot. The dryness that occurs during winter can dehydrate the body even quicker than when it is hot. When you are dehydrated you tend to eat more. The rule of thumb when drinking water is to drink your own bodyweight divided by 2 in ounces.

For example, my bodyweight is 180 pounds so my daily intake of water should be at least 90 oz. What is your daily intake? Have you been drinking enough water? If not make the changes now. A good way to drink more water is to just replace all of your juices and sodas with good old H2O.

An Outline of Jessica Biel's Workout

Jessica Biel probably has the best body in Hollywood. Seriously, she is a great role model for women who want to get in shape. Jason Walsh, her personal trainer recently revealed to People Magazine the workout that gives her slim thighs, firm butt, and generally a rocking body!

Were you lucky enough to see Jessica Biel in the movie Blade 3? If you did, you may have seen fitness perfection. Seriously...Jessica looked amazing in that movie. As a side note, Ryan Reynolds got in amazing shape as well. The great thing about Jessica Biel is that she manages to stay in amazing shape without losing her femininity.

So here is a summary of Jessica Biel's Workout (along with my comments)

1) Cardio...for cardio she does interval training. After jogging for 1/2 a mile to warm up, she does a total of 6 sprints with short rests in between. She sprints for two sets of 200 meter sprints, two sets of 150 meter sprints, and two sets of 100 meter sprints.

My Comments: This is the best form of cardio to really burn stubborn body fat quickly. High Intensity Interval Training has been shown to burn significantly more body fat than steady state aerobics.

2) Plyometrics..."These hurt," says Walsh of stair jumping. "Even athletes hate them. After Jessica did these the first time, she would've punched me if she had the energy." How-to: Jump from the bottom step of a flight of at least 20 stairs to the third. Keep going, skipping a stair each jump.

My Comments: Her trainer, Jason Walsh, understands that plyometrics tone the body in ways that can't be duplicated in the gym. It makes sense that he would recommend these, because Jessica will get better muscle tone as a result. This is one of the reasons why I believe that athletes have better looking bodies than people who only workout in the gym.

3) Weight Training..."We tend to use lighter weights and do more reps," he says. "We keep moving, so it becomes a cardio workout too."

My Comments: This is what Craig Ballantyne, who wrote an excellent book called Turbulence Training, recommends. You can basically burn fat like crazy if you do your weight training in a very specific manner.

4) For the Abs..."Hanging leg raises don't build a six-pack, but they flatten," says Walsh. "Jessica hates them, but she powers through!" They also do the Russian Twist. Sit down and lean back slightly. Hold a 5-lb. medicine ball and twist from side to side, 15 twists per side, three reps.

My Comments: I don't agree with this approach to developing the abs. The problem with hanging leg raises is that they shorten the hip flexors which can dramatically increase your chances for injuries. I am a big believer in a great exercise called "planks". Not only are they effective...they help protect your back from injury as well.

Summary...Jessica Biel's Workout is very similar to a high level athlete. It makes sense that she would have a better looking body than most other actresses in Hollywood...she is training at a higher level. Her approach is intense interval workouts, which have proven time and time again to burn more body fat than "slow and steady" types of workouts. No wonder why she looks so good!

The Key To Weight Loss

And then there is the next best thing. Get a workout partner, or group of friends and have them hold you accountable - commit to them that you will train and eat according to your goals.

With the holidays over and the New Year upon us, now is as good of time as any to actually begin your annual new year's resolution to shed some of those pounds. Other pointers are - "find a passion" and " it won't work until you do it for yourself" and things of that nature. Very simple, straightforward advice and heartfelt assimilations of the collective wisdom of many. But, contrary to many who ask for an opinion on them, there really isn't ANYTHING to opine about... I am in complete and full agreement with anything and everything that inspires, motivates, moves and coerces you to take action and attack your weight problems.

The central point always is, and always will be this. You have to take action, and whatever leads to that place is exactly what will work for you. Timing is often key. When people get to the point of their lives where absolute desperation kicks in regarding their bodies, their health and their futures...my experience tells me that is EXACTLY when the motivational motor kicks into high gear! Wouldn't it be so much easier to lose weight if we could diet without counting? Cardio Madness - How Much Is Enough?

When it comes to weight loss, cardiovascular training is important to perform. However, if it is the only exercise that you are doing for weight loss then you are definitely doing yourself a disservice. Also, how do you know when you are doing too much of it?

The purpose of performing cardiovascular training

Cardio training involves movement of large muscle groups aerobically or anaerobically to increase function of the heart and blood vessel systems known as the cardiovascular system. Movement can be activities such as running, jumping, playing sports, treadmill, stationary bike, etc. It's long term benefits include lowered heart rate, lowered blood pressure, higher HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and much more.

When it comes to weight loss, it burns a tremendous amount of calories. However, more doesn't necessarily mean better. You want to maximize your cardio training so that you get the maximum results and that you don't waste your time.

How much is enough?

ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) recommends the following:

Do moderately intense cardio 30 minutes a day, five days a week or do vigorously intense cardio 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week.

I won't disagree with this at all. I would follow the guidelines myself. However, let's take somethings into consideration. Generally, very few if any exercise organizations recommend performing cardio for more than 1 hour. So if you are doing it longer than 1 hour, I wouldn't recommend it. Unless you are an athlete who is fueling up during training so as not to drop off performance.

When you perform too much cardio, your performance could actually drop off. For example, if you are feeling like you are wearing down that is probably a sign that you are doing too much. If you stopped seeing results from your cardio training then it's time to do something else. If nothing is happening from your cardio results then it's time to change it up.

How to maximize your cardio training

One way that I recommend that you can maximize your cardio training is to keep doing different cardio training methods. For example, run for one day. Play basketball the next day. Go on the stationary bike the next time you train. Take a group exercise fitness class the next time. And keep varying it up. Make it so that it's never the same thing. The point is to keep the body guessing.

Another method is to perform short bursts of high explosive cardio training and then take it down. For example, your on the treadmill and you explode for 30seconds and then rest for 1min. You continue to train like this for no more than 15 minutes because it's so demanding physically.

Personally, I love to play soccer for my cardio training. It's fast at times, it's slow, it requires power and then it requires you to take it slow. I love the constant change in intensities. The same can be said about fitness boxing and cardiokickboxing. These are fun for me and I enjoy them very much.

The point is for you to maximize your cardio training so that you continue to see results. It's also important to do things that you like. I personally don't like to get on machines. I would rather compete or do something that I really like and that I can continue to do for a long time. But this article isn't about me it's about you. 9 Things I Noticed About Weight Loss Failure

As an expert and someone that has been in the community of fitness and bodybuilding for many years, I've seen people start diets and fail after 3 weeks even when they did lose 5 pounds the first week on their diet. Here are some facts about weight loss that you should know if you dare attempt to start a diet on your own.

  • If done incorrectly can cause serious rebound effects.
  • First week of initial Weight Loss is all water and glycogen -- Not Fat.
  • Second week of Weight Loss is water glycogen and muscle -- Not Fat.
  • Diets are a temporary solution to weight loss.
  • Your body adapts to your diet within 3-4 weeks.
  • There are different types of metabolisms and the diet that you are currently on might work against your metabolism. This is VERY common.
  • Healthy Fat Loss on diet alone does NOT work.
  • Beware of Diet pills, if it's not a drug it will NOT work. If it is a drug, it will NOT work without proper nutrition and exercise, however caution must be used as the fat loss will only be temporary once you come off the drug.
  • Losing 15 pounds does not mean you lost 15 pounds of fat (adipose tissue).
Fat burning should be part of the weight loss process if done correctly. A nutrition plan and exercise work best for ultimate fat loss. Losing fat greatly improves life expectancy, physical and mental well-being. The true goal behind weight loss is FAT LOSS. You want to lose weight from FAT which is mainly adipose tissue. Small Changes Build to Weight Loss

Does this sound familiar....you promise yourself that the next morning you'll totally revamp your food choices, exercise daily, and be successful with your diet plan? Has it worked long-term? If not, maybe you tried to do too much too quickly. It can be overwhelming to make big changes and expect them to stick. Why not try something different? Make small changes to your food choices and exercise. Small changes build to big weight loss success.

In working with my clients, a successful strategy in losing weight and keeping it off is to make one small change at a time. Do you reach the top of a staircase by a giant leap? No, you rise to the top one step at a time. The same for weight loss is to make small changes and allow them to build success one after the other. Before you know it, those changes create a momentum of success that move you forward to your weight loss goals.

1. Eat slowly and calmly. Enjoy the tastes and textures. Put your fork or spoon down between every bite. Intersperse your eating with enjoying the company of others joining you for the meal. Your brain has a delay to your stomach by about 20 minutes when it comes to the feeling of fullness and satisfaction. If you eat slowly enough, your brain will catch up to tell you that you are no longer in need of food.

2. Eat only when you're hungry. Sounds easy but can be challenging to differentiate between your head hunger and hear your stomach truly growling. It is amazing how often we eat out of boredom, nervousness, habit, hobby, recreational sport, or frustration. Unfortunately for some of us that struggle with weight and food issues, we have actually forgotten what physical hunger and the cues feel like. Next time, wait until your stomach is growling before you reach for food. If you're craving a specific food, it's probably a craving, not hunger. It's probably your head that's hungry rather than your stomach. If you'd eat anything you could get your hands on, chances are you're truly physically hungry.

3. Out of sight, out of mind. The other day I found a surprise lurking in my refrigerator. It was a holiday treat from Thanksgiving that got pushed behind other items in the refrigerator. I'd forgotten all about this little treat put in the refrigerator because I didn't see it. Fast forward to how it looked today; it was petrified and looked awful. Seeing this Thanksgiving goodie that I'd kept that looked delicious in November to its current appearance was disgusting. It sure put the food choice into perspective. You aren't tempted if you don't see it. Even further, if you don't buy it or bring it home, you aren't tempted either. Keep your trigger foods out of your radar.

4. Empower yourself with the trash. Huh? My husband brought home leftover food from a work function he attended. It was not the best nutritional choice for anyone. Rather than keep it around, I threw it away. It felt so empowering to throw away the unhealthy food item. I chose the health of myself and my family over the temporary enjoyment of eating an undesirable food choice. You and your health are more important than any fleeting food fix

You don't have to undertake all of the changes in your lifestyle all at once. You've done that before. Did it result in long-lasting change? Probably not. Try something different. If you want different results, try it in a different way. Small changes build to big changes. Before you know it, you'll step on the scale and see your goal weight. Small changes can equal big success.
